Kohl's Sonoma Fall Wax Melt Reviews 2019

This is a review of Sonoma Fall 2019 wax melts from Kohl's. All but 2 of these scents are dupes from previous years, although I'm glad they brought back some of the better scents, like Autumn Hayride, Cinnamon Spice Cookie, Falling Leaves, and Vanilla Pumpkin Latte.

Autumn Hayride
Cedar wood, cinnamon bark and white clove
This has been one of my favorite scents for years. It's strong and super smoky, and smells like burning leaves, with raw wood, clove, and pine notes. A perfect cozy scent to melt on a chilly Fall or Winter day! It's the same scent as 2015, 2016 (notes: Orange, white clove, and cinnamon bark mix with cedar wood, oak moss and vanilla bean) and 2018.

Autumn Nights
Tangerine, pomegranate and evergreen
This is a brand new scent, not a dupe of an older scent. It's pine with a little bit of a sweet note, as well as a sage note that smells a bit like Play-Doh. It's the same sagey note in the old ScentSationals Mountain Twilight and a little bit in Better Homes & Gardens Crisp Fall Leaves. It's not my favorite scent because of that Play-Doh note, but I think most people will like it. Looking at the notes, the sweetness may be the pomegranate, but it's not fruity; in fact, it has a bit of a cinnamon sugar note. I don't smell tangerine or orange.

Bourbon Pumpkin
Pumpkin, creamy vanilla and caramelized sugar
On cold sniff this smells like marshmallow with pumpkin spices, but melted it just smells like sweet pumpkin pie filling (without the pie crust). I don't detect any bourbon type notes. It's a nice scent. It's the same scent (and notes) as last year's Bourbon Pumpkin Brulee and White Pumpkin Marshmallow from 2017 (notes: pumpkin and vanilla marshmallows with a blend of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger).

Caramel Toffee
Caramel, butterscotch, and cinnamon
A fantastic, yummy scent that smells like a sweet, rich cinnamon bun but without the bready note. I think there's just a hint of caramel. This scent has been coming out almost every year (2015, 2016 and 2018).

Cinnamon Spice Cookie
Cinnamon, warm maple syrup and sugar cookies
This is an incredible scent! It's a super rich, sweet, intense maple scent with cinnamon, ginger, caramel, and maybe a barely detectable smidgen of apple, and possibly a smidgen of rich vanilla buttercream. It's so sweet and rich, it's like the cinnamon equivalent of fresh rich chocolate fudge (in fact, it might actually have a chocolate note). It's kind of similar to ScentSationals Coffee Cake Swirl, but way sweeter and richer. It really doesn't smell like any other cinnamony scent out there. I'm not a fan of cinnamon, but I adore this scent! This is the same scent as 2018, as well as Home for Christmas (same notes too) from 2018.

Crackling Cedarwood
Smoked wood, warm vanilla and sweet tobacco
I'm not sure if this is the same scent as 2018 (which I think was also the same as Fireside Memories from 2017 with notes of pumpkin, caramel, vanilla, tobacco and smoked woods). I recall that scent smelling like vanilla buttercream and marshmallow with a hint of caramel and tobacco, and maybe a smidgen of woodsiness. But with this scent, the tobacco is the strongest note, and there's also a bit of an incense vibe and a tiny bit of a cologney note that I didn't smell in the older scent. I do detect a hint of caramel, and a smidgen of marshmallow and woods.

Fall in Love
Fresh apples, woodland sage and cedarwood
This smells like old brown apples that have fallen to the ground at the end of the season, mixed with musty, mossy brown leaves. But unlike most old apple and brown leaves type scents that come out in the Fall, this one has another note that smells a bit like earthy pineapple, and it has a smidgen of a vinegary note. It's not one of my favorites. This scent comes back every year, including 2015 and 2018. But the notes used to be apple, pear and cedar (the new notes are definitely more accurate).

Falling Leaves
Green apple, caramel and vanilla
This type of scent often comes out in the Fall. It smells like earthy apple cider mixed with old brown apples that have fallen to the ground at the end of the year, mixed with brown leaves. It sounds bad, but it smells fantastic, like a woodsy, slightly sour, slightly sweet apple scent. The scent notes are obviously incorrect; I think the notes from 2015 or 2018 are the correct ones. This scent came out in 2015 (notes: Crisp green apple, orchard pear, oakwood and harvest acorn) and 2018 (notes: fresh apples, woodland sage and cedarwood). It's also similar to Harvest Sunrise from 2016.

Harvest Gathering
Red apples, nutmeg and orange zest
This is a brand new scent, not a dupe of an older scent. It smells like apple cider or cinnamon apple with a tiny bit of a sour note, but it's not as sweet as apple cider. I don't detect nutmeg or orange. Nothing really exciting here.

Lakeside Campfire
Evergreen, smoked hickory and birch wood
This is a smoky scent with a hint of pine. The hint of sweetness I detect on cold sniff disappears when melted, and the smokiness takes on a bit of a Liquid Smoke mesquite type note, as well as a slightly sour note that I think ruins the scent (but I may be in the minority, because most people tend to love this kind of scent). I don't think this is the same scent as 2016 and 2017. Notes were different both years (lakeside air, mulled apples, smoky cinnamon clove, birchwood and campfire). I don't recall the sour note in 2016 and 2017, and it smelled more like a fresh shower gel, where this one does not. The smoky note was much more subdued in the older scent as well.

Pumpkin Gingerbread
Ginger, allspice and cinnamon
I don't think this is the same scent as 2017 (notes: Gingerbread, cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg). I said that one was primarily a gingerbread scent, with just a hint of nutmeg that gives it a pumpkiny note. But this smells more like dry ginger powder without the cake notes, and it's much less sweet than gingerbread, although I do detect the nutmeg note as well, but again, it's like dry nutmeg powder. But because it's basically just a dry spice scent, it can be mixed into any other scent to give it a ginger/nutmeg note! The old scent had a throw of 5 out of 5.

Pumpkin Spice
Pumpkin, brown sugar and gingered vanilla
It's pumpkin pie, including the buttery, slightly salty pie crust. This scent comes back every year, including 2016 and 2018.

Toasted Marshmallow
Vanilla, caramelized marshmallow and hickory
A super sweet vanilla buttercream scent with caramel and marshmallow, and just a smidgen of a smoky note. It's fantastic! I don't think it's the same scent as 2017 (notes: sweet vanilla marshmallows toasted over a crackling campfire), as I described that as being a milky marshmallow scent with no caramely note (this scent is not a "milky" scent, and it definitely has a caramely note). Interestingly, I described Fireside Memories, also from 2017, as marshmallow with a hint of caramel and barely noticeable smokiness, so I think this is the same scent. I think it's also the same as Crackling Cedarwood from 2018 (notes: smoked woods, warm vanilla and sweet tobacco), which I described marshmallow with caramel and a smidgen of woodsiness, (and I thought it was the same as Fireside Memories). Well, that's not confusing at all!

Vanilla Pumpkin Latte
Pumpkin, warm vanilla and espresso
This is one of my favorite scents! It's a fantastic super creamy coffee scent with a sweet vanilla buttercream note, a hint of caramel, and a smidgen of pumpkin spices. It's definitely a coffee scent rather than a pumpkin scent. This scent came out in 2017 and 2018. In 2017 the notes were different (brown sugar, pumpkin, vanilla, clove and cinnamon), even though it's the same scent. It's also similar to Pumpkin Latte from 2015.
