Yankee Candle Wax Melt Reviews - October 2020

This is a review of Yankee Candle wax melts, some current scents from Walmart, and most discontinued scents from 2017 to 2019 that can be found at discount stores such as Big Lots, Gabe's and Ollie's.

Some of these are the regular Yankee Candle line, and some are Yankee Candle Home Inspiration (which are made for specific stores and are usually not found on Yankee Candle's website).

Alfresco Afternoon
Top: Fresh Air Accord, Eucalyptus; Mid: Aromatic Juniper, Nectarine Blossoms; Base: Conifer Leaves, Woody Notes
A picnic in the shade, surrounded by wildflowers and juniper buds with just a touch of nectarine swirling in the breeze
I really like this scent! It smells like a combination of apple and pine with a hint of caramel and smidgen of cinnamon. It's quite rich, almost to the point of being nauseatingly rich. Looking at the notes, I see the only fruit is nectarine, but it doesn't really smell peachy to me. And despite the one fruity note, this is mostly a fruity scent, like maybe 60% fruit and 40% pine on cold sniff, but more like 80% fruit and 20% pine when melting. It smells more like a fall scent than a spring scent to me. It's a great scent!

Berry Apple
Autumn's best fruit medley of apples and berries - tart and sweet
I found this one at Big Lots. I wasn't going to buy this because on cold sniff it smells like an artificial, slightly sweet berry scent. But when melted, it's fantastic!! I smell cranberry, pomegranate, a little apple, and possibly a hint of raspberry. It's sweet and rich, with only a smidgen of tartness, and possibly a hint of vanilla but no cinnamon or other spices. It might also have a smidgen of a bakery note, but it's not a bakery or fruit pie type scent at all.

Candlelit Cabin
Top: Rhubarb, Black pepper, Apple; Mid: Nutmeg, Magnolia, Hazelnut; Base: Vetivergrass, Patchouli, Amber
The warm glow of candlelight welcomes you to a winter retreat — rustic pine, warm spices, and earthy notes fill the air.
A fantastic smoky scent with soapy, fresh, and subtle pine notes, and a hint of black pepper. It's just a tiny bit sweet but I can't figure out if the sweetness is floral or foodie. Looking at the notes, I don't even know if they're correct. I don't detect rhubarb (which is a sweet and sour berry note), apple, nutmeg, or hazelnut at all. Vetiver, possibly, since that's often added to cologne scents and this does have a hint of that (although it's not a cologne scent). And the magnolia is probably that hint of sweetness I detect.

Cranberry Pie Pop
Grandma's recipe – straight from the oven with a crisp vanilla pastry and tangy cranberries
A medley of sharp fruity berries to match a holiday season
I found this one at Big Lots. It's an incredible rich, fruity scent that smells like cranberry but without the tartness, and maybe a hint of some other kind of fruit. It's very sweet, but also with a tiny bit of saltiness from a rich buttery note, and a bakery note but not like pie crust, more like a cobbler. It smells a lot like the old Better Homes & Gardens Cranberry Cookie Crumble, but sniffing them side by side, the Yankee scent is much fruitier. It's a little closer to the old ScentSationals Cranberry Oatmeal Cookie, although that scent was sweeter and had more of a bakery note. So I'd say it's kind of like a combination of the two. I LOVE this scent!

Garden Picnic
Top: Sweet Apricot, Nashi Pear, Nectarine; Mid: Peach, Yellow Iris, Water Lily; Base: Warm Musk, Golden Amber, Sandalwood
Bring your blanket and a basket of the ripest, juiciest fruits for a sunny picnic among the flowers.
Super sweet candy-like apple and peach, with maybe a hint of vanilla and a smidgen of a sweet floral like gardenia. I'm not a fan of peach scents, but because of how sweet this one is and all the other notes, I love this scent! Looking at the notes, okay it's pear and not apple.

Holiday Hearth
Top: Anise, Cinnamon, Clove; Mid: Gardenia, Cedarwood, Oakmoss; Base: Warm Musk, Vanilla Cream
Despite different notes (except for the cinnamon, clove, cedar and oak), this smells just like Pecan Pie Bites. If I didn't know they were different scents, I would think they were the same. I think this scent is just a tiny bit more smoky and salty.

Icy Blue Spruce
Top: Fresh Juniper, Spearmint Leaves; Mid: Winter Spruce, Black Currant, Snow Covered Cedar; Base: Fir Balsam, Powdery Musk
A fresh breath of winter forest — juniper berries, blue spruce, spearmint leaves
Despite the name, this is not a pine scent. It smells like mint but not a sweet peppermint, maybe a garden mint or subtle spearmint, but it's not sweet at all. It also has a smidgen of fruit in the background but, again, not sweet. And a hint of a soapy note. There may be a smidgen of pine way in the background, but it's barely noticeable. This has a bit of a musty note that I don't care for. The mint (eucalyptus?) smells like the base for ScentSationals Raspberry Margarita, although I really liked that scent.

Mandarin Cinnamon Tea
This does smell like the scent name. I smell orange (but not a strong, citrusy orange), tea, and subtle cinnamon. There's also a tiny bit of pine in the background that gives this a fall or winter vibe. It smells a little pit like orange pomander, which I normally don't like, but this is different and quite nice!

Pear & Pinecone Wreath
A nice very sweet pear scent. I don't smell any pine or pinecone notes at all. And it's not a bakery pear scent, although there could be a smidgen of caramel. The only other Yankee pear scent I've reviewed is Poached Pear Flambe, but I'm not sure if this is the same scent because I no longer have that one to compare (and I don't think Yankee re-uses old scents). I described that scent similarly, even with the caramel, but I said it also had a sweet milky note, a smidgen of a perfumey note, and it wasn't overly sweet... while this scent is quite sweet, with no milky or perfumey notes.

Pecan Pie Bites
Top: Cinnamon Leaf, Burnt Sugar, Raw Honey; Mid: White Hazelnut, Pecan, Dark Chocolate; Base: Clove, Oak Wood, Smoked Cedar
This is a Fall 2020 scent from Walmart. It's a rich, VERY salty, slightly smoky nutty scent that smells just like roasted chestnuts. Despite having a bakery scent type name, it's not sweet. It's not the same scent as Golden Chestnut. But Yankee did have a Warm Chestnut scent years ago that I never smelled, so maybe it's a dupe of that one. It's a great scent, but very strong and rich, almost nauseatingly so. Looking at the notes, I'm not getting any of those except maybe some of the base notes.

Santa's Treats
The rich buttery smell of cookies fresh from the oven, ready and waiting for that special visitor
When I reviewed this scent in 2015, I described it as, "vanilla with white chocolate or chocolate chip cookies". I'm not sure if this is the same scent, because that one was called "Santa's Treat" (without the last "s"). This does smell like vanilla sugar cookies, and there may be a smidgen of chocolate way in the background, but I also detect a hint of cinnamon and smidgen of almond as well. It's a nice cookie scent, but rather basic. The throw on that scent was 0 out of 5, but they changed their formula after that to make the scent stronger.

Summer Daydream
Top: Bergamot, Citrus Blossoms; Mid: Gardenia, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine; Base: Amber, Sandalwood, Patchouli
Drift away among the flowers with the warm, sweet scents of exotic ylang ylang, bergamot, and jasmine.
A lovely sweet floral scent with gardenia and a baby powder note, and maybe a smidgen of patchouli.

Sweet Pea Madeleines
Top: Citrus Zest, Almond Extract; Mid: Sweet Pea Petals, Cardamom; Base: Powdered Sugar, Vanilla
Delicate madeleines drizzled with a sweet icing made of citrus zest, powdered sugar, and a touch of cardamom
This smells like vanilla cookies with a hint of almond and a smidgen of a sweet pea floral. It's quite nice, although a bit basic. When melted, it just smells like vanilla cookies and I really don't smell the sweet pea. Looking at the notes, I don't smell citrus.

Warm and Cozy
Top: Balsam, Peppermint, Eucalyptus; Mid: Cashmere, Cedarwood, Golden Amber; Base: Patchouli, Lit Firewood, Musk
A beautiful bonfire night ends wrapped up in a soft blanket as you breathe in crisp, fresh notes of cedar, cashmere, and eucalyptus
This is a Fall 2020 scent from Walmart. It's woodsy and a tiny bit smoky, with a bit of eucalyptus and maybe even a hint of spearmint, a tiny bit of sweetness, a smidgeon of pine, and maybe a barely detectable smidgen of smokiness. Looking at the notes, they're spot on. It's quite nice!

Water Garden
Top: Lemon, Orange, Watery; Mid: Rose, Muguet, Green Lily; Base: Woody, Musk
Soothing reflections... pretty water flowers and lush green notes with hints of melon and musk
A lovely, super sweet powdery floral scent of gardenia or lily of the valley with maybe a lilac note, and possibly a bit of musk, and maybe a smidgen of some kind of really sweet fruit way in the background. It's very VERY sweet, but I LOVE it! Looking at the notes, I don't smell lemon, orange or any citrus notes. I suppose it does have a hint of rose, but it's very subtle. And muguet is another name for lily of the valley.
